I don't really have a problem with online training for a beginners, in particular for kata with only a single person. Sometimes they quit pretty quickly because the training doesn't match up to what they had imagined it to be in their mind. What is more of an issue are people who don't really have an open mind after practicing from a book or from watching videos and think they know it all. Many people say that they are worried about having to try and fix "bad habits" but nearly every beginner has bad habits anyways despite my best efforts. Sometimes you run into people who are self taught and then try and take up kendo and iaido. Look, I've never been involved with martial arts much, I am a military man foremost who learnt ACTUAL WAR PRACTICE, but I didn't think these practices would have such elitism and gatekeeping. Most people are using these lockdowns to advocate their practices and compensate training with virtual lessons - not simply deny that very prospect as any autonomous, distant learning as IMPOSSIBLE. Yes, people may lack feedback and perform certain techniques ERRONEOUSLY until corrected (oh no, the integrity!), but that's there to be corrected, they are developing some experience and their passion can be engaged until 'official' training is available. There's no reason a person can't observe techniques, study philosophical fundamentals and practice drills/routines at home as leisurely, basic fun until more opportunities are PRESENTED - it not only accommodates circumstances right now, it brings more people into the fold who could progress for MORE and also creates a friendly awareness of the overall field. You left behind family, job, school and friends to practice a hobby? Dude? I'm afraid no one should be expected to have that level of sacrifice and that's a ridiculous standard to demand on people to be 'right' to learn the practice - this isn't a cult or career, it's not the Olympics.
